East Gate Bel Air

East Gate Bel Air (also known as Old Bel Air) A very small and extremely wealthy area of the Bel Air community. In fact, this area (along with its eastern neighbor of Holmby Hills) easily represents the highest concentration of property value and wealth in Los Angeles, if not the United States. Old Bel Air is made up of old-world estates created mostly before World War II. These estates are large, heavily walled and gated (and patrolled) compounds where tall hedges create an air of inaccessibility, wealth and power. Founded in 1923 by Alphonzo E. Bell, Sr. the original tract was composed of 128 lots on Bel Air Road starting north from South Beverly Glen and Sunset Boulevard and reached through the impressive huge iron East Gate entrance, hence the area‚ name. The five roads which branch from the East Gate are Saint Pierre, Saint Cloud, Bellagio, Copa De Oro, and Strada Corta Roads. Over the years, many of these 128 lots have since been combined into single properties, but the original Bel Air allotment is what distinguishes East Gate Old Bel Air from the rest of present-day Bel Air. By 1937 Bel Air extended westward all the way to Sepulveda Boulevard, its westernmost boundary today. At its southernmost edge, Old Bel Air now borders the campus of UCLA.
